Mentor Background

What is your area of expertise?

  • Environmental Impact
  • Policy
  • History
  • Other
  • Are you interested in mentoring high school or college students, or both?

  • High School Students
  • College Students
  • How did you become interested in this area?

Many years of education, travels and self-taught in certain areas.  There is no set straight path into one's field, often it is dendritic.  i have stayed within social and political science, science and technology and ancient and modern history.  All of these areas work for me.

What was your career path to get here?

BA in Political Science did not readily get me a job, I eventually went to work as a gas chromatographer in the oil industry for 6 years---yes lab rat chemist!  I met my husband there, a hard rock geologist and then we moved to New England.  I still did quality control and training in the food industry and decided to go into teaching and teach more people at once.  I entered the social science arena for teaching and that was hard place to also get a job, kept at it.  Many more educational experiences and started to learn more about computers in the 1980s and eventually was teaching with computers integrated into my social science classes.  Struck gold as they say and in 2000 attained position as Computer Dept. Head, earned a Masters in Education from Lesley University and eventually got some history classes and did more travels around the world.  Boredom struck, wanted something else and was fascinated by the global reach of terrorism and counterterrorism and completed a Masters in security studies from University of Massachusetts at Lowell.

    Why should the public care?

Nuclear weapons, nuclear power plant meltdowns, these all present significant damage when they occur.  Every generation of people has an opportunity to foster a control and eventual end to nuclear weapons.  Nuclear technology in use for beneficial reasons has a different place in our thinking and should not be jettisoned just yet.

What is a current issue or trend that concerns you?

COVID19 has shown the world how easily it is to stop everything and grind to a halt.  This was part of the mantra for a nuclear weapons attack....The nuclear weapons, climate change, viral pandemic have all highlighted the interconnectedness we have but do not fully yet realize.  Raising awareness without causing message fatigue is difficult but if balanced and clear many will respond.

Would you be willing to speak to a classroom about your work?

What themes or topics would you be interested in lecturing or discussing with a class?

National Security, WMD-especially bioterrorism and nuclear deterrence

International Security Studies and the use of WMD by terrorist groups

Global Security and decommissioning of nuclear power plants (high school level)

Global Economy-Pandemic, rise from the ashes-after WWII

Global Perspectives-Interconnectedness-not just about the Zen quality but the tangible aspects that most people forget.

    Nothing found
